Saracen Joust Arezzo
The Giostra del Saracino is one of the many historical reenactments that abound in central Italy . Restored as a historical reenactment in 1931, the Giostra del Saracino takes place in Arezzo's Piazza Grande on the third Saturday in June at night and on the first Sunday in September during the day. The four districts of the city compete in the joust: the Porta del Foro district , the Porta Crucifera district , the Porta Sant'Andrea district , and the Porta Santo Spirito district.
Each knight runs the lists in the order established by the drawing of the careers , a ritual that takes place in the town square a week before the Giostra. The knight carries a lance with which he must strike the board held by the buratto, a wooden statue representing the Saracen (hence the name). The score ranges from one to five points; each district runs twice until, sometimes resorting to a tiebreaker, one district prevails over the others.
